2 Best Hotels in Lassen Volcanic National Park, California

Background Illustration for Hotels

Other than the camping cabins at Manzanita Lake, Drakesbad Guest Ranch is the only lodging available inside Lassen. It's rustic (no electricity, just old-fashioned kerosene lamps), expensive, and popular: the ranch is often fully booked a year or more in advance for summer stays. The towns surrounding the park have bed-and-breakfasts, chain hotels, motels, and other lodgings.

Drakesbad Guest Ranch

$$$$ | 14423 Warner Valley Rd., Chester, CA, 96020, USA Fodor's Choice

Closed for four years following the 2021 Dixie Fire, this century-old property in Lassen's remote but beautiful southeastern corner began receiving guests again in 2025, with options that include cabins, lodge rooms, duplexes, and bungalows. Some units have electricity for lighting but no outlets, others have solar-powered lanterns and no electricity; accommodations in a nearby annex have electricity and outlets. Guests staying in cabins and lodge rooms have toilets and sinks but must shower in a communal bathhouse; the duplexes, bungalows, and annex rooms have private showers. Meals, casual during the day and rather elegant in the evening, are included in the rates; nonguests may call ahead and reserve meals. Securing a room at this popular spot can be difficult, but you can book online well in advance (two-night minimum for all reservations). At time of writing, the ranch’s pool hadn't reopened.

Pros

  • Only full-service in-park lodging
  • Back-to-nature experience
  • Room options for 3 to 10 guests

Cons

  • On partially paved road a 45-minute drive from nearest town (Chester)
  • Rustic, with few in-room frills
  • Two-night minimum for all reservations

Manzanita Lake Camping Cabins

$ | Lassen Park Hwy., Lassen Volcanic National Park, CA, 96063, USA

This lakeside compound of 20 rustic but handsomely designed modern cabins provides the only roof-over-your-head lodgings on the main park highway, but this is a camping experience, albeit a nicely outfitted one. The wood-frame units, nestled in a grove of pine trees, can sleep from two to eight people and have tables and chairs, porches, picnic tables, fire rings, bear-proof lockers, and beds with firm mattresses. Shower and bathing facilities are nearby at the camp store. Bedding is not included, though you can purchase a reasonably priced amenity package that includes sleeping bags, lanterns, cooking utensils, and a s'mores kit.

Pros

  • Only lodgings on Lassen Park Highway
  • Picturesque setting
  • Amenity packages, including sleeping bags, available for purchase

Cons

  • Must supply your own bedding
  • Cabins have no electricity or running water
  • Open only seasonally
