10 Best Hotels in Rhodes, Rhodes and the Dodecanese

10GR Hotel & Wine Bar

$ | Rhodes Town, 85100, Greece
A new addition to the Old Town in 2018, this rather neat hotel makes use of vaulted stone cells dating back 600 years. Rooms are small, but large Art Deco--style murals, vintage furniture, clever lighting, and a cunningly concealed bathroom make them seem larger and, despite their size, luxurious. This place has character in spades. Outside, each cell has its own patio area, and downstairs, where breakfast is served in the morning, is perhaps the best wine bar in the city. A collection of 250 Greek wines run the gamut from pittance to pricey, making this a pleasant spot to while away the evening. It's open all year.

Pros

  • Rooms are quiet and away from the bustle below
  • There's nothing else quite like it in the city
  • Great wines to choose from

Cons

  • This area can be pretty noisy
  • There isn't much space in the rooms
  • As ever, there's no parking

Kokkini Porta Rossa

$$$$ | Rhodes Town, 85100, Greece Fodor's Choice
A family passion project has turned into the most beautiful small hotel on the island. The building is wrapped around the ancient walls of the city, and is where the armory and food cellar of the Knights who guarded the “Red Gate” once stood. Inside, stone-walled rooms are decked in sumptuous antiques, rich fabrics, and plush furnishings. Husband and wife team Nikos and Angela have thought of everything: free minibar, a tablet loaded with sights and advice; an open lounge bar; a peaceful walled courtyard terrace. They may even show you their other project: the restoration of a Greek Orthodox chapel opposite the hotel, originally built by the Knights to win over locals. The breakfasts here are the best in Rhodes, as course after course of pastries, fruit, yogurt, and homemade jams arrives. In the evening the family's son, Paris, a talented pianist, has also taken to serenading guests with fine jazz standards. It’s worth noting that high season for the typically older clientele here tends to be later (Sept.–Oct.); book far ahead as there are only six suites.

Pros

  • Free minibar and sumptuous terrace breakfasts
  • Bespoke trips can be arranged with local experts
  • Guests get a tablet loaded with maps and sights

Cons

  • With only six suites it fills up fast
  • Minimum two-night stay
  • It's a longer walk than at most hotels to the center of Old Town

Marco Polo Mansion

$$ | Aghiou Fanouriou 40–42, Rhodes Town, 85100, Greece Fodor's Choice

Entering this renovated 15th-century Ottoman mansion in the maze of the Old Town's colorful Turkish section is like stepping into another world. Individually styled guest rooms come with furnishings often dating back hundereds of years, and are painted in deep-hued warm colors, with Oriental rugs and rare Eastern antiques (including large beds draped with translucent canopies) and surround lush gardens. Floors are rich tile and pitch-pine; embroidered cushions beckon from low sofas; and the scent of orange blossoms fills the air. One room was even a former harem, dating back to when this was under the ownership of a prominent Ottoman official. The clientele tends to be older here, and constant: a steady stream of Italian tourists return time and again, so book far in advance.

  • Breakfast served in the garden is a thing of joy
  • The courtyard restaurant is wonderful

Cons

  • Rooms are reached via several sets of stairs
  • Hotel can only be reached on foot and is tricky to find
