Moni Emvasis

$$$ | Monemvasia, Greece
The conversion of this 500-year-old building is a thing of beauty. Owner Nektaria has created the most exclusive of stays, with just three suites branching off the main reception and bar. The wood-beamed rooms are all different: some replete in elegant Venetian-style furnishings; others more design-led. Uniting them are magnificent views from the balconies, offering glimpses of the old fortifications creeping to the west and the seas beyond. Breakfasts are, naturally, first rate considering its Chrisovoulo café-restaurant (on the street below) is arguably some of the finest dining in town. The wine list there is especially good.

Pros

  • Views from the rooms and terrace bar are magnificent
  • Luggage is portered from the gate
  • Superb breakfasts made with local produce

Cons

  • It doesn't come cheap
  • There are stairs to climb and no disabled access
  • Inside can be a little dark
